Classic Granny Square Crochet Pattern

A classic granny square is one of the most useful crochet pieces you can learn. It works as a coaster, blanket block, bag panel, or practice swatch, and the rhythm of chain spaces makes it easy to see where the next stitches belong. This version uses a simple four-round square with clear corners and a final edging round for a tidy finish.

Materials

  • Worsted weight cotton or wool yarn in one to three colors
  • 5 mm crochet hook, or the hook size that gives a relaxed fabric
  • Yarn needle and scissors

Abbreviations

ch = chain, sl st = slip stitch, dc = double crochet, sp = space.

Pattern

Center: Ch 4 and join with a sl st to form a ring.

Round 1: Ch 3, work 2 dc into the ring, ch 2. Work 3 dc, ch 2 three more times into the ring. Join to the top of the beginning ch-3. You will have 4 clusters and 4 corner spaces.

Round 2: Sl st across to the next ch-2 corner. Ch 3, 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc in the same corner. In each remaining corner work 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc. Join. You will have 2 clusters along each side.

Round 3: In each corner work 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc. In each side space work 3 dc. Join. You will have 3 clusters along each side.

Round 4: Repeat the same rhythm: corners receive 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc, and each side space receives 3 dc. Join and fasten off.

Finishing

Weave in ends carefully on the wrong side. For a flatter square, mist lightly, pin the corners evenly, and let it dry. When making a project with many squares, keep the same hook, yarn weight, and blocking size for every motif so the joining step is smooth.

Helpful Notes

If the center hole looks too open, pull the starting tail snug before weaving it through the first round. If the square begins to twist, check that every corner has the same number of chains and that no side space was skipped. A consistent corner rhythm matters more than speed. For a traditional blanket, make a small stack of matching squares first, measure them after blocking, and then decide how many you need for the final layout.
